Why I Support The Library

May, 25 2010

Growing up in Panama, I learned the value of the public library at an early age.  As a young boy I spent many hours in our public library reading history books, especially those about the US Revolutionary War, the Battle of the Alamo, and the Civil War.   I always felt safe and comfortable in the library surrounded by the books that tell the stories of our past.

Of course, there were only books in those days.  Libraries have so much more to offer now with videos, dvds, computer access, and special programs targeting a variety of interests. Libraries obviously serve many more functions these days.  They are a social place.  They are a quiet, relaxing study place. They are a repository of history and culture.  They are a portal to fantasy and mystery.  And they provide us with access to our world through technology.  I am constantly pleased by the new offerings that our Boerne Library staff provides for all ages.

I have been fortunate to witness the evolution of our own Boerne public library for nearly thirty years.  The Boerne community has seen the library grow from basically a store front on Main Street, to the building that is now the Police Station, and which now occupies the Dienger Building.  Due to the fantastic programming provided by City staff and our many volunteers over the years, our library has once again outgrown its space.

The new Patrick Heath Public Library, opening in 2011, will be a new, modern Boerne landmark designed to meet our community's needs for years to come.  What an exciting time in our history.  What an outstanding reason to live in this community. Our library will continue to be a premier library in the Texas Library System, and as City Manager, I am very proud to be part of this next step in the Boerne Public Library's continuing evolution of service and excellence to our community.

A great city invests in itself.  The new Patrick Heath Public Library will be an example of such.
